During Professional Development Day on Friday, October 11, all classes will be excused. During that day faculty and instructional staff across campus will meet from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to review student learning outcomes in each academic major. Program-level student learning outcomes, as they are generally called, describe what graduates of a program should know and be able to do. The review is, in part, preparation for the Systems Portfolio the campus will submit by June 1, 2014. The Systems Portfolio is an essential element of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission's Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP), UMC's chosen accreditation pathway.
This review is also part of assessing how well students achieve the learning expected of them. A continuing cycle ("Plan, Do, Study, Act") of assessment enables continuous improvement of student learning, a core element of UMC's commitment to students. Planning for the day's activities has been a joint effort of the Faculty Assembly's Assessment Committee, the academic department heads, the director of institutional effectiveness, and the vice chancellor for academic affairs.
